Pet policy is the single most common reason a relocating family's shortlist collapses at the last minute. Nairobi's low-density suburbs are genuinely dog-friendly — Karen, Runda and Loresho compounds routinely house large dogs — while apartment blocks in Kilimani and Westlands frequently prohibit pets outright in the house rules.
Get the permission in the lease, not in a WhatsApp message, and check whether the estate's own rules override the landlord's consent. Ask about a pet deposit, whether there are size or breed limits, and where the animal is expected to exercise. If you are importing a pet, allow time for the Directorate of Veterinary Services import permit and a rabies titre where required.
Karen, Runda, Muthaiga, Loresho and Kitisuru are where pet-friendly stock actually lives, along with garden apartments and cottages in Lavington and Kileleshwa. In dense Kilimani and Upper Hill towers, pet permission is the exception rather than the rule.
