Furnished Apartments with Pet-Friendly Apartments in Nairobi

Pet policy is the single most common reason a relocating family's shortlist collapses at the last minute. Nairobi's low-density suburbs are genuinely dog-friendly — Karen, Runda and Loresho compounds routinely house large dogs — while apartment blocks in Kilimani and Westlands frequently prohibit pets outright in the house rules.

What to ask the landlord

Get the permission in the lease, not in a WhatsApp message, and check whether the estate's own rules override the landlord's consent. Ask about a pet deposit, whether there are size or breed limits, and where the animal is expected to exercise. If you are importing a pet, allow time for the Directorate of Veterinary Services import permit and a rabies titre where required.

Supply and pricing across Nairobi

Karen, Runda, Muthaiga, Loresho and Kitisuru are where pet-friendly stock actually lives, along with garden apartments and cottages in Lavington and Kileleshwa. In dense Kilimani and Upper Hill towers, pet permission is the exception rather than the rule.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep a dog in a Nairobi apartment?

In Kilimani and Westlands towers, often not. In Karen, Runda, Loresho and garden apartments in Lavington and Kileleshwa, yes — that is where pet-friendly supply concentrates.

Is there a pet deposit?

Commonly one month's rent as an additional refundable deposit, or a fixed sum. Get the refund conditions in writing.

How do I import a pet into Kenya?

You need an import permit from the Directorate of Veterinary Services, a health certificate from an accredited vet, and rabies vaccination documentation. Start at least six weeks before you fly.

Are there vets nearby?

Yes — Karen, Lavington, Westlands and Gigiri all have established small-animal practices, and several offer house calls.

What about cats?

Cats are accepted far more widely than dogs, including in some blocks whose written rules say no pets. Still get it in the lease.
