A pool is a genuine amenity in Nairobi's climate — outdoor swimming is comfortable most of the year at this altitude — and it is one of the amenities families with children weigh most heavily when comparing two otherwise similar blocks. It also comes with a maintenance cost that lands in your service charge every month, swum in or not.
Ask who maintains the pool and how often, whether it is heated, and what the hours are. Look at the water on the viewing: cloudy water on a Tuesday means the maintenance contract is not being honoured. Ask whether the pool is fenced if you have small children, and whether guests are permitted.
Pools are standard in premium and luxury apartment blocks in Westlands, Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Riverside, and common in Karen and Runda compounds. They are rare in budget stock anywhere, and in the satellite towns they appear mainly in the larger new developments.
