Keyless entry matters most for two Nairobi tenant groups: short-stay guests arriving on late flights when no caretaker is awake, and field or mission staff who are out of the country for weeks and need to grant access to a cleaner or a visiting colleague without couriering a key.

What to ask the landlord

Ask what happens when the battery dies or the power fails, a good installation has a mechanical override and a low-battery warning. Ask how codes are issued and revoked, and insist that any code used by a previous tenant is changed before you move in. For serviced units, confirm who else holds a permanent code.

Supply and pricing across Nairobi

Smart locks appear mainly in serviced apartments in Westlands, Kilimani and Riverside that also operate on short-stay platforms, and in a small number of newer Gigiri and Runda units aimed at travelling diplomatic staff. They remain uncommon across the wider market.

Are smart locks common in Nairobi rentals?

Not yet. They cluster in serviced apartments that also host short stays, mostly in Westlands, Kilimani and Riverside.

What happens in a power cut?

Most smart locks run on batteries independent of mains, and good ones have a mechanical key override. Confirm both before you rely on it.

Can the landlord see when I come and go?

Some systems log entries. Ask what is logged and who sees it, under the Data Protection Act 2019 that log is personal data.

Is keyless entry safe?

As safe as the code discipline around it. Change the code on move-in, use a unique code per person, and revoke cleaner codes when arrangements change.

Can I fit my own smart lock?

Usually only with written landlord consent and on the condition you restore the original lock at the end of the tenancy.
