Furnished Apartments with an Open-Plan Kitchen in Nairobi
Nairobi's older apartment stock was built around a closed service kitchen, often with a separate rear entrance for domestic staff. New developments in Kilimani, Westlands and Ruaka have moved almost entirely to open-plan living, which is brighter and more sociable but carries a specific local caveat: strong-smelling cooking travels straight into a furnished sofa.
What to ask the landlord
Look for an extractor that vents outside rather than recirculating, and check the gas arrangement — most Nairobi kitchens run on LPG cylinders, so ask where the cylinder lives and who replaces it. Check worktop length honestly: open-plan kitchens in compact Kilimani units are often under two metres of usable surface.
Supply and pricing across Nairobi
Open-plan kitchens dominate post-2018 blocks in Kilimani, Westlands, Ruaka and Syokimau. Closed kitchens remain standard in Parklands, South B and older Kileleshwa stock, and in Karen and Runda houses where a separate kitchen and pantry is the traditional layout.

Frequently asked questions
Are Nairobi kitchens gas or electric?
Most run on LPG cylinders, sometimes with an electric oven. Ask who supplies and replaces the cylinder, and whether a spare is kept.
Do open kitchens have extractors?
Newer builds usually do, but many recirculate rather than vent outside. Check, because it decides how your living room smells.
Is an open kitchen practical for Kenyan cooking?
It works, but heavy frying and long simmering are why many Nairobi households keep a closed or secondary kitchen. A ducted extractor solves most of it.
Which layout holds value better?
Open-plan lets faster in Kilimani and Westlands among younger tenants; closed kitchens still lead in family stock in Parklands and Karen.
What about the service entrance?
Older blocks have a rear kitchen door for staff and deliveries. Newer open-plan units usually do not, which changes how deliveries and house help work.
