Nairobi's climate makes outdoor space usable almost every day of the year, which is why balcony size is one of the few specification details that genuinely moves rent in Kilimani and Westlands. For remote workers it doubles as a second desk; for families it is where laundry actually dries.

What to ask the landlord

Check the orientation — a west-facing balcony bakes from 15:00, an east-facing one is pleasant at breakfast. Look over the rail at what you are actually facing: in Kilimani that is frequently the next tower's balcony four metres away. Ask whether the balcony is glazed, and whether the block permits drying laundry outside, because many newer developments do not.

Balconies are standard in post-2015 apartment stock across Kilimani, Westlands, Kileleshwa, Parklands and Ruaka. Older Parklands and South B blocks often have none, and Karen and Runda houses trade the balcony for a garden.
